You're never too old to color, are you? Well, you might think we're crazy, but we've actually had a party with our adult lady friends, where we brought out coloring books and crayons as a way to interact. We had a blast! Lots of giggling went on, as well as childish fun.

{Beach Fashion} Chanel's Must-Have Seashell Clutches for 2012

We promised you a peek at Chanel's 2012 Spring/Summer seashell inspired bags in yesterday's article, so here you go! (by the way, what did you think of the seaside inspired photo shoot in France?) We loved the black and white shots celebrating Chanel's newest collection.

The timeless Parisian fashion house, Chanel, has turned Spring into a water wonderland with the help of the infamous, Karl Lagerfeld. Its Spring/Summer 2012 campaign features models, Joan Smalls and Saskia de Brauw, who were photographed by the French label’s creative director, Karl Lagerfeld.

The pair of models posed at the Hôtel du Cap Eden Roc, in Cap d'Antibes, France, and in the nearby Mediterranean waters. The pair is photographed while engaging in sporting activities, while looking effortlessly chic (of course) in airy dresses and signature jackets.

Beach Walk - Part Two, Lighthouse on a Farm Estate

As promised, we're heading back to Leadbetter Farms today for the rest of the tour. (Part 1 - Beach Walk) So after a bit of research, we learned that the private lighthouse, which can be seen for miles away, actually houses a water tower and has a few stories of living space within. The estate is situated on 600 acres and the lighthouse stretches 140 feet into the air.

We encourage you to visit the links at the bottom of the article for photos of the interiors of the buildings. They are amazing, whimsical and the most unique we've ever seen.

The main house is a barn-like structure which offers the charm of a Cape Cod.

The owner, Craig Tillotson, has incorporated a sense of whimsy throughout the property with dragon weather vanes, sculptures, and gargoyles.

Nautical Details Found on a Beach Walk {Part 1}

As promised the other day, once we discovered our seashells, we grabbed the camera and walked along one of the beach paths which winds through the dunes. The dried plumes against the blue skies made for a lovely site. There is a certain beauty this time of year, especially when there is a bit of a breeze to make them sway.

Why did we choose this beach path from all the others? It's not just for the beautiful grasses; but the home which sits at the end of the path. The plat of land is filled with a lighthouse water tower, home, lake, fountain, boats and horse stable that is called Leadbetter Farms.

Pretty cool, isn't it? Today we'd like to show you some photos we captured of the farm's landscape. There were so many wonderful coastal photo opportunities (if you like rope, lights, rust, boats and stuff) that we thought we better have you come back on Tuesday to see the home. We are such a tease, aren't we?

Visual Beauty of a Rose

A rose is a flower with such visual and fragrant beauty. My simple purchase of a single rose was a treat for myself last week. Found at the grocery store it was inexpensive yet its beauty took my breath away and made me smile. Once home, the stem found a quaint home in a small jelly jar.

One of this year's personal goals is to learn how to take better photos and learn how the camera really works. I've been taking some DIY photography lessons from Sarah at A Beach Cottage as well as Donna of Funky Junk Interiors, so you will get to witness, my hopeful, progression. What better item to practice on than a rose?

{Coastal Craft} Hummingbird Cottage 'Finally' Gets a Sign

Long time readers know that our beloved little piece of heaven is fondly referred to as Hummingbird Cottage. On my to-do list for all of last year was to paint a sign for hanging by our front door. Well, about a week before Christmas I found a bit of time to get the paint out.

I've been saving some salvaged boards discovered on the beach for about two years and with a tiny bit of trimming they worked perfectly. Three boards were placed side-by-side, attached together with metal brackets on the back and poof!!... I had the perfect painting surface.

Prepping the sign is the most important part since it will be outside in the elements of a coastal climate. A coat of Kilz primer, a light coat of green acrylic paint and then brushing of white semi-gloss paint which was left over from our kitchen cabinets - it's ready for stencils etc. Everything dries pretty fast since I was painting inside so it actually isn't as much work as it sounds!

I had some old brass stencils which I used for the numbers and word hummingbird. Once stenciled I then used my paint brush to fill in the stencil open spaces (sorry, I didn't take photos, I know - BAD blogger!).

I used a pencil to lightly freehand the word "cottage" on first as well as draw the hummingbird, then painted over them. 24 hours later I added a couple of coats of exterior varnish plus two saw-tooth hangers for the back - DONE!

Our little "cottage" has an official sign...finally. :O)

{Beach Combing} Discovered Seashells Are A Bit More Special

We have seashells...lots and lots of seashells. Many vintage shells as well as many purchased; but there really is something special about discovering seashells yourself. We headed to the beach a few days ago and it was one of those winter days that you could classify as near-perfect. No wind, bright sunshine and no visitors around...just the family enjoying the sand and sea.

We timed our visit perfectly as the high tide was just starting to go back out so there were many little treasures waiting for us along the shoreline. Large clam shells which we use to make outdoor patio candles with and lots of little cockle shells. We found these two gorgeous white shells and were very happy. You have to realize that this isn't Sanibel Island; where the beaches are covered with seashells; nope, not like that at our beach at all. Aren't they beautiful? They are called Wrinkled Dogwinkles.

Just when our excitement had waned, something large caught our eye. We were driving the Jeep at the time and we quickly stopped; but as we turned around the waves came in and totally covered the object. Luckily, Liz's young eyes found it again as she hopped out and grabbed what we thought was a rock, until she picked it up and discovered it was a large Moon Snail.

Excited doesn't even cover how giddy we were; literally screaming like teenage girls! We rinsed it off with some water when we got home and haven't even attempted to clean it yet. What you can't tell is how large it is, here are some photos next to the first two shells. It is large enough to cup over my ear so I can hear the surf!!

After beach combing, we went for a little hike in the dunes. We'll be sharing that with you in a few days...you won't want to miss it if you love lighthouses, the beach and dune grass.

Face Masks, Quality Time & Chick Flicks

How often do you take an afternoon just for yourself? That often, huh? Liz and I decided to have a "girls day" last weekend and boy did we have fun. We sent the hubby/dad to the garage to work on some projects for the afternoon and we did pedicures, manicures, hair treatment and facial masks. The masks were definitely the most fun since we used ingredients from the refrigerator and pantry.

We got the idea about home facials from our friend Kristin at My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia. She recently shared her Pumpkin Face Mask, which piqued our interest.

We looked to see what we might have available and we had plenty of plain yogurt and oatmeal -- Google came to the rescue with a simple recipe. Since Liz and I both have sensitive skin we thought the yogurt would be rejuvenating. I never thought in a billion years that I'd let my hubby take a photo of me looking like this...but anything for you guys!

A mixture of regular oatmeal and natural plain yogurt made quite a mess I'll admit (next time I'll put it in the blender to make the oatmeal smaller and add some honey). We left the mask on for about 20 minutes and then warmed wet wash clothes in the microwave for about 30 seconds; which we used to steam and then wipe our masks off with. What a difference, a week later and my face still feels amazing.

Tubs of warm water with a bit of Vitamin E oil was very enjoyable to soak our feet in while we watched a movie. Of course, we had to have a good "chick flick" so French Kiss was our movie of choice.

A winter's afternoon spent at the beach is certainly cold; but makes us feels like kids again - we love it! Pacific Northwest beaches are for those of us that like it rugged and cold. Cold is one of those relative things, isn't it? Those along the upper Eastern seaboard would probably call us sissies.

Anyways, we get cold walking on our beaches this time of year and we are always on the lookout for warm and cozy fabrics to bundle up in. Hats, gloves, boots...what else will we find?

{Coastal Craft} Driftwood Becomes Dream Sign

Winter is for the Birds

Winter is for the birds...Jay birds that is! We spend a lot of time each morning enjoying the local wildlife including the Stellar's Jays. These beautiful blue birds are striking in appearance with their deep blue color. They are also very intelligent and are quick to steal cat food, bird seed or anything else you might have outside.

Steller's Jays form monogamous, long-term pairs and they remain together all year. We have two pairs which live nearby and they sure bring us a lot of enjoyment. I was able to carefully sneak outside and catch a few shots of these coastal neighbors. They seem to really like hanging out near one of our Camellia bushes. Enjoy!

Crushing on Chunky Sweaters

I have a crush, please don't tell my husband! I have a serious, unbridled crush on this, and every single other, chunky sweater. Since my old thermostat has switched from always being hot to always being cold I can actually wear them now (if you have no idea what I'm talking about, don't worry you will some day).

Due to the dampness, Pacific Northwest winters can chill you to the bone so layers work best. A lovely chunky sweater can help keep the spirit and body warm. Snuggle up, it's cold outside!

{Best of 2011} Creating a Serene Cottage Bedroom

Our fifth most popular coastal article of 2011 - My bedroom! Wow, what an honor. We'll actually be changing things up in our bedroom during 2012 so it's fun to look back. Enjoy!

Long time readers know that I feel that the master bedroom is the most important room in the house (It's All About the Bedroom) but we still have such a long way to go in creating the perfectly serene cottage bedroom that I truly am looking for.

Our bedroom does have new paint, curtains, white ceiling fan, re-painted lamps and ....well, that's about it!

Since there is no headboard, I thought I'd search for a way to create a large beach cottage art piece to hang over the bed. While digging through the linen closet I discovered a quilt which had been long forgotten. It had holes here and there plus torn edges (thank you to my sweet poodle, Minnie, when she was teething). The quilt was designed with pink and blue appliqued flowers on one side and a simple white back. The white back with the stitched design showing through won my vote. Now, what can I do with it??

Some old scrap wood was sanded and made into a simple frame. A coat of white paint plus a very lightly applied blue-grey glaze finished off the frame. A huge piece of cardboard from a furniture purchase (thank goodness the hubby keeps everything) was then wrapped with a large piece of the quilt. I had strapping tape so used that to attach the quilt to the cardboard. Two sawtooth hangers attached to the back of the wood frame worked perfectly for hanging it on the wall. It's nice that there is still enough quilt left for a table runner and/or some pillow shams. By using tape, I can easily change out the quilt with other fabric or whatever I want down the road.

Here is what the framed quilt looks like in our beach cottage bedroom...

A beautiful starfish & seashell garland from Caron's Beach House was tacked to the corners of the frame. The organza ribbon provides a bit of lovely romance.

Since I haven't spent money on a headboard yet, you may be wondering what I have spent money on. Well, not the cute eyelet pillow shams -- I found them in the bottom of my linen closet too!

There's nothing better than a good night's sleep so money was spent on bedding. 100% Egyptian cotton sheets, a lightweight down comforter, velvet chenille blanket, fluffy new pillows and an Egyptian cotton basket-weave blanket all provide lovely texture as well as warmth, comfort and cuddliness. Everything was found at either Ross Stores or Overstock.com so not much money was spent - yippy!

Long sheer curtains from Ikea were added last Autumn; which let the sun shine through. Each curtain rod was hung as close to the ceiling as possible to create more height in the room. We love listening to the surf on warm days so we open the windows and the white sheers elegantly blow in the breeze. A white five-finger starfish graces the top of each window.

Using different textured fabrics create great interest in any room...but especially a bedroom. Since we live in the Pacific Northwest it is damp and cool much of the year so we gravitate towards warm and cuddly. We also have three dogs so fabrics which are easily washable and stain resistant are a must-have in our beach cottage.

We still have dark bed tables and dresser which we are contemplating painting; however they aren't very old and in fairly good shape still...we'll see.

Daisy just couldn't wait for me to finish taking photographs and snuck up onto her favorite velvety blanket... She's such a little stinker :O)

I feel like I need a little color besides the Vanilla Brandy on the walls...

{Best of 2011} Sand Dollars & Seashells for Your Seaside Decor

Happy, almost, New Year! Today we are sharing our fourth most popular article of the year...it's a classic and all of us beach combers can relate! Have a lovely day. :O)

Sand Dollars...unique, beautiful, fragile and memorable. As beach dwellers we have collected a multitude of Sand Dollars which now grace our decks, jars, baskets, bowls and more. We literally have collected so many that we don't know what to do with them all!

Displaying them in baskets and old pots is delightful; however I'm yearning to find some home decor projects that are different than the "glue shells onto mirror or picture frame" kind of crafts. Before we can get started on crafting, let's begin with learning how to get your Sand Dollars or Seashells ready for use.

Get Your Collection Ready!

When we first started collecting Sand Dollars I had no idea that greenish brown ones were probably still alive. If you find one this color and it has a hairy covering then the specimen is still alive and should be place back into its sandy home. If the sand dollar appears white, tan or gray with no hairy spines then it is dead and ready for collection.

We have found that the best time to search is at low tide right along the water's edge. If you find one then most likely there are more in the immediate area as they live in colonies together.

If you keep some brown or very dirty Sand Dollars you can soak them in cool water until the water turns brown; discard the water and add fresh water. Continue until the water remains clear.

You then will want to soak your collection in a solution of 50% water and 50% household bleach for 20 to 30 minutes. Remove them from the water and place in the sun to dry.

Once your sand dollars are completely dry you can harden them by mixing together Elmer's white glue with an equal part of water. Paint your sand dollars with the mixture and let them dry...you are now ready to display or use in a crafting project.

Let's Craft and Decorate!

Now that we have our items ready for crafting we have to decide what to do with them. There are many simple ways to use seashells in your home's decor...

Project 1 - Curtain Tie Back
For this project you will need a sand dollar, a hot glue gun, glue sticks, thick cord, and hook screws. You can also add paint to your sand dollar to make it match the color scheme of your home if you like.

Start this craft project by screwing the hook into the wall next to your curtain. Next figure out the length that you will need to cut the cord. Do this by measuring the cord against the curtain, the hook, and the wall. Now you are ready to make your tie back. Simply cut the cord slightly longer than it needs to be and tie the end in a knot leaving about 2 inches to fray for tassel. Now glue the sand dollar right above the knot. Thread the other end of the cord through the hook, and tie the end in a knot the same way you did the first knot. Fray the ends of the cord, and this home décor craft project is complete. Project 2 - Candle Centerpiece
Sand dollars are a wonderful addition to your home décor and this craft project utilizes sand dollars and candles to make a lovely centerpiece. You will need a large old jar, glitter, glue, ribbon, a few different sized candles that are taller than the jar, and some sand dollars.

Start by gluing the sand dollars to the outside of the jar in any pattern you like. Next glue the ribbon to the outer top edge of the jar and use the glitter to cover the rest of the jar. Allow this entire piece to dry. Now add the candles to the inside of the jar; it is fun to use several different size candles for this craft project.

More easy ideas...

Napkin Rings - Hot glue a small sand dollar, seashell or starfish onto any fabric or wood napkin ring for a customized beach table setting.

Fill A Glass Jar - Sometimes the most simple thing, is the most beautiful. Simply fill a clear glass jar, vase or bowl with sand dollars or a mixture of seashells.

Place atop your Guest Towels - Having overnight guests? Place a stack of clean bath towels on their bed with a starfish or large sand dollar on top.

Wall Art - Purchase frames or shadow boxes and glue sand dollars into the center. You can paint the backing a beachy color or paint each a different hue as shown below.

Trim a Lamp Shade - Take a plain lamp shade and hot glue your choice of seashells along the bottom trim of the shade for a custom lamp look.

Whether it's Vintage, Found or Used...bottles and jars provide extremely charming decor for your beach home or getaway.

I've loved old bottles for as long as I can recall...probably back to the glass bottles of Coca Cola that I drank as a child (yes, soda pop use to come in glass bottles). A favorite childhood toy of mine was a half drunk bottle of soda that was turned into a musical instrument. If you have no idea what I'm talking about then you are too young to know the joys involved with playing the bottle with your childhood friends.

Any way, old bottles are one of the most versatile of all things around and work PERFECTLY in a beach cottage environment. A vintage glass bottle can be a simple vase for the most lovely of flowers or can be a memory jar filled with sand and seashells as well as a holder for bath salts or bubble bath. Of course, bottles are simply charming by being grouped together on a shelf.

I love how they reflect light to assist in creating a glow in my cottage...I love that they are old and have a history...I just simply love them! Here are some favorite ideas for incorporating old bottles and jars into your beach cottage decorating.

Why not transform your jam jars and flea market bottles into elegant vases? Simply coat their interiors with glass enamel. Martha Stewart used white enamel in the photo below; which yielded different shades of green. Dishwasher-safe enamel paint is sold in most craft stores. My Sweet Savannah loves decorating with vintage bottles too! She featured these photos displaying handwritten labels on bath salts and such as well as the beautiful roses in glass jars...aren't they charming?

We love, love, LOVE this photo from Eat Drink Chic. The bottles were found and flowers are from her mother's garden...lovely!

Maine Seasons is a wedding designer who scavenged together all these vintage medicine and tincture bottles for one of her weddings this summer. They will be filled with flowers, mixed with tons of votive candles and canning jars of larger flower arrangements.

The most creative award goes to Ruffled Blog. Look how she used small vintage bottles and Manzanita branches to create a gorgeous centerpiece...

Just envision...reindeer; windows full of Christmas wonder; bells with hand painted details; and lighted snowflakes on the street lights. Sounds like an old fashioned Christmas doesn't it?

Welcome to our neck of the woods at Christmas! We finished up our Christmas shopping last week and took some snapshots of favorite Christmas decorations around our local coastal towns. One of our favorite things about coastal life is the simplicity which still exists in the communities around us. Driving around looking at decorations reminds me of being a kid when everything seemed more magical and this activity is still one of my favorite things to do.

{Coastal Christmas - Day 17} 13 Simmering Potpourri Recipe Ideas

Making your own simmering potpourri recipes is cost-effective and will have your home smelling warm and cozy for the Holidays. I've been doing this for many years and its a great way to use up orange and apple peels as well as outdated juices. Just fill a pot with water, add your favorite ingredients and simmer all day. This also helps humidify your beachy home a bit.

The recipes are just guidelines, you can use different amounts and mix up ingredients as you like. You can certainly use ground cinnamon if you don't have any cinnamon sticks available. Have fun experimenting!

Tip: Save orange, lemon and lime peels, apple skins (dry them out first before storing in a container) for your homemade potpourri.

Directions

Recipe For the Oven:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Take a piece of tinfoil (a few inches wide), pour a teaspoon of vanilla on top and place the foil in the oven. Turn off oven and prop the door open a bit.

Fill a loaf pan with water and your favorite recipe from above. Set in oven on high heat until it starts filling your home with lovely smells. Turn off oven, then prop the door open.

Tips

Storage: You can refrigerate your simmering recipe and reuse daily for up to one week. Just keep adding water as needed.

Frugal Idea: For apple juice, cranberry juice, herbs and spices that are outdated, don’t throw out–just add to your simmering pot.

(Coastal Christmas - Day 16) My 3 Favorite Holiday CDs

Music is such a huge part of my life that I just can't stress it enough. It probably all started with my mother who played the piano and sang classic songs of the 1930, 40's and 50's to my brother and I when we were growing up. As a young girl I took piano lessons and also played the clarinet. I seem to always have music playing when I'm working and depending on my mood it can vary widely...hard rock, big band, classical, pop. I'll listen to pretty much everything except for rap.

I'm one of those strange birds that starts listening to Christmas tunes in August...yes, seriously. I love it! It inspires me, makes me feel great, brings back wonderful memories. My favorite Holiday Albums for 2011 all feature "crooners" in the jazz, big band and swing genre. I've attached a video for each of my favorite sons...I hope you enjoy!

1. Michael Buble...my favorite for sure! His version of "All I want for Christmas is you" makes me melt.

2. Christmas with The Rat Pack - The boys singing, "It's A Marshmallow World" makes me smile.

(Coastal Christmas - Day 15) Favorite Holiday Treat Recipe

So what do us beach cottage dwellers eat for treats during the Holidays? The same thing as you! Sometimes it feels like everyone thinks that all we eat is seafood...well, we do eat a bit of seafood but not as a sweet treat! lol.

We're all about simple around these parts. We don't just make and eat these treats during the Holidays but we love them so much in our cottage that we seem to have a fresh batch around all too often. Neither Liz or I have the patience for any recipe with a ton of ingredients and this fits the bill perfectly. The hubby begs for these things as he is a huge fan of chocolate and marshmallows so who are we to say, "No!"?

You'll recognize the general recipe as it's been a staple in many households throughout the years...Rice Crispy Treats...with a little twist.

We actually use Cheerios (or our favorite knock-off bagged cereal) and they are FABULOUS! They tend to satisfy those that love sweets and those that don't.

Cheerio Marshmallow Treats

Ingredients:

5 cups Cheerios

4 cups Mini Marshmallows

1 cup Milk Chocolate Chips

2 Tablespoons Butter

Other:

Butter

Wax Paper

Rectangular Glass/Metal Pan

Directions:

Pan Preparation...

Line your rectangular pan with a sheet of wax paper.
Scatter a few marshmallows and chocolate chips around the bottom of the pan (this will become the top of your treats)

Over medium heat...

Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in the bottom of a non-stick cooking pot
Add marshmallows to melted butter, stirring constantly until they are melted.
Take off heat and dump in your Cheerios.
Stir to evenly distribute melted marshmallows over all Cheerios.
Quickly mix in chocolate chips to distribute evenly.
Press mixture into pan. {We usually lightly butter a small piece of wax paper and push the mixture in with our hands.}
Cool and then cut into bars ~ ENJOY!

{Coastal Christmas - Day 14} Beachy Exterior Door

Get your coats on, boys and girls - we're heading back outside today! A super deal on artificial evergreen garland certainly came in handy for our exterior door garland. Our bucket of driftwood combined with some found fishing floats, rope from the beach, sparkly ribbon (which reminds us of bubbles) and starfish were combined to create a beachy entry for the old cottage door.

Lay it all out and start wiring everything on...nice and tight! We get some serious wind storms in these parts and we don't want any driftwood flying about.

You know how we love big white starfish, so we have many big ones attached to the garland.

We found this Japanese float last year and purchased the wood ones from a local retailer.

Pretty simple and it certainly adds a bit of Coastal Christmas flair to our otherwise dreary front door area (which will be re-painted next year, yippy!).

(Coastal Christmas - Day 13) Front Door Wreaths

We're talking super easy today folks! Our front door wreath is used all year long...I love the red berries and pinecones which work in our area (Washington State). I decided to tuck a large white starfish in the center of my favorite wreath and it's ready for a Coastal Christmas! We like it so much we may just leave it like this all year.

We'll show you a few photos of the exterior door garland tomorrow...

{Coastal Christmas - Day 12} Light a Candle in the Window

It just doesn't feel like Christmas unless we have a candle or two in the windows. It would be oh so lovely to have real candles flickering all through the night; however not quite practical.

Many years ago I purchased battery operated candles from a well-known home shopping network on TV and they are still going strong! Each candle has an auto sensor which comes on at night and goes out each morning, so those like me that might (and will) forget don't need to worry.

My flickering faux candles are beautifying my kitchen window this year.

{Coastal Christmas - Day 11} Pennant Garland from Xmas Cards

If you've been following our Coastal Christmas series, then you know that I love Christmas cards. One of the problems with loving Christmas cards is that you end up with a huge pile of them after years...and years...and more years. As part of the simplified Christmas we are focusing on this year, it means getting rid of stuff...gasp!

The huge pile of Christmas cards really needed to be thinned out but I didn't want to just keep them hidden in an old address book any longer so what do I do with them? Why not make them in a pennant garland?!

What supplies did I use? Household string, scissors, cardboard for a template, pen, double stick tape and old Christmas cards...easy peasy! I drew a double triangle shape (since you'll be folding it over the string) onto cardstock in the size that I wanted each flag to be. If you can find a temple, I recommend it :O)

Lay your template on top of the Christmas card, cut out, write the name of who the card was from/year (for sentimental purposes only), fold card over string and apply double stick tape...repeat. Pretty darn easy and so cute.

The best part about the pennant garland is that I have wonderful memories from many family members who are no longer with us except for in spirit. Christmas is all about family, warm memories and joy...this does the trick!

{Coastal Christmas - Day 10} Kitchen Christmas Tree

Are you enjoying our 24 Days of a Coastal Christmas series? We are certainly have an enjoyable time writing it for you. Today we step into the kitchen of our cottage for a Country Coastal Cottage tree...We ended up with an extra Christmas tree (I seriously have no idea where it came from!) so we decided that the kitchen island needed some Holiday fun too.

I scavenged the kitchen for cookie cutters, measuring cups and anything which I could stick into the kitchen tree. This little tree certainly has a more "classic country" feel than our living room beachy tree. I guess since I grew up on a farm, that part of my childhood has stuck with me.

While I decorated the tree, Liz decided to bake the hubby and I some Pumpkin Muffins. Isn't she a sweet daughter?

Christmas Tree Supplies....measuring spoons, blank gift tags, cookie cutters, tea cups, old silverware, torn fabric strips, starfish, twine, scissors - check.

...and tah-dah!! It's magically all decorated!!!

I love gingerbread men!

The "beautiful tier cakes" and "Hershey's" fliers were my mom's from the 1950's; which I found in an old recipe box of hers.

You can see part of my "My Ice Cream" hand-stamped spoon from Beach House Living(tm). They are so cute. If you aren't familiar, we recommend you check out their store.

We wrote favorite food words on the blank gift tags...The Pineapple Upside Down Cake is another recipe from my mom. I even stuck a candy thermometer in the tree!

The bistro sign at the top usually hangs on one of my kitchen walls but it worked perfectly as the topper. It was really fun adding new and old kitchen gadgets to the tree.

As you can see, it certainly pooped out the cat from all the decorating!

and Minnie seriously couldn't care less!
(We found her sleeping with her head resting on this package so we tossed the bow on her and she never moved!)

Oops...I almost forgot the pumpkin muffins. Each one tastes like a piece of Pumpkin Nut Bread...the word "yum" doesn't even begin to cover it. We still have a few in the freezer for breakfast morning too, 'cause that's how we do it at the beach!

{Coastal Christmas - Day 9} Small Coastal Town Christmas

Welcome to small town America! Ilwaco (our neighbor to the south) is a working fishing village in a scenic and tranquil setting which has BIG holiday spirit. Each year they share their Holiday glee with the lighting of "The World’s Tallest Crab Pot Christmas Tree" and "The World’s Shortest Fireworks Display". We'd love to give you a little Coastal Christmas tour of this delightful village which we enjoy visiting during the Holidays (as well as the rest of the year!).

When you visit Ilwaco you're likely to see festively decorated crab pots down Main Street.

By mid-November the crab pot tree was ready to go but construction had to wait for passing storms.

The first Saturday of December is the day which the celebration officially began, complete with a fireworks show (world's shortest fireworks show, so if you blink you might miss it! lol)...

...and don't forget the Christmas carols -- Ilwaco style, of course!

The Port of Ilwaco and stores were decked out for Holiday shoppers. We especially love Time Enough Books garden boat; which has been transformed into a beachy Christmas boat.

After the Christmas tree lighting, the annual lighted boat parade began, which was led by the local Coast Guard. Aren't the colored Christmas lights beautiful reflecting off the water?

The stores were all decorated for holiday shoppers and the Coastal Christmas spirit was alive and well in Ilwaco over the weekend.

{Coastal Christmas - Day 8} Wrap It Up, Coastal Style!

Turn on your favorite Holiday music, pour yourself a warm beverage, maybe a little snack and have fun wrapping up the treasures you found for loved ones. That's right, you can have fun wrapping presents - it doesn't have to be tedious.

To keep it simple we purchased a large roll of Kraft paper* (newsprint also works and is a real bargain) to wrap all the boxes the same way. We found some fun ornaments at a local Dollar Store, grabbed some cotton twine, wire edge ribbon {purchased on 100' roll for a bargain online} and various sized gift tags and starfish to create unique looks on each package.

Here's some of the coastal gift wrapping we came up with...

We had a really fun time wrapping our gifts this year and by wrapping everything in the same paper it made it quicker, as well as economical. You can find Kraft rolls of paper at office supply stores like Staples or Office Depot and even Amazon. The paper also works very well under craft projects {think about crafting with the kids!}. Don't forget...the beach life is about doing things in a simpler way, while enjoying yourself.

{Coastal Christmas - Day 7} Beach Walks & Hot Cocoa

Even though large storms are a regular occurrence along Pacific Northwest beaches in December it is still probably one of my favorite months of the year. When we aren't experiencing storms we occasionally get clear and cold days which are splendid for beach walking. The "touristas" are gone so the beaches are deserted and there are almost always treasures to be found. Our abundance of Pacific Sand Dollars, floats, rope and driftwood were mainly found during the month of December.

The exhilaration of winter beach walks results in a cold face and hands but makes me feel alive and vibrant. And is there any better way to clear your mind? I think not.

Warming up after a beach walk with a hot cup of cocoa with marshmallows {of course!} is one of my favorite things in all the world. Looking at hot cocoa pictures is almost as exciting! lol....

{Coastal Christmas - Day 6} Whimsical Dining Light Decor

You can't forget to decorate the chandelier over your dining table...well, at least we can't! In keeping with the rest of our decorations, we kept it simple and fun this season. Since the only glass ball ornaments we had on hand were bright metallic red we decided to spray paint them white! Don't you just love spray paint? ;o)

We didn't do a heavy coat of paint so the finished ornaments have a touch of rosy pink in them, which creates a warm glow. Once the ornaments were dry we assembled some white string, couple of white starfish, fake evergreens and a coastal gift tag with the word OCEAN stamped on it. This is what we came up with...

Simple. Coastal. Christmas.

{Coastal Christmas - Day 5} Coastal Dining Room Table

White, light and super-duper simple...that pretty much sums up our dining room's coastal Christmas decorations this year. This is very unusual for us as we usually have red, green and gold plastered everywhere. We have all commented how much calmer we feel this year with the softer palette. Hmmmm....

Our fairly neutral palette includes a white tablecloth with a seashell design, white plate, white desert plate with tiny red trim, white Christmas mugs plus a row of aqua mercury glass candle holders down the center of the table. Too simple? Nope, just right for our beach family.

Of course, no dining table setting at our cottage is complete without a starfish!

We are totally in love with these candle holders!

We laid out a row of shimmering silver ribbon under the candle holders.

....and then couldn't make up our mind if we liked it or not!

We can't wait to eat dinner at our Coastal Christmas table this year! Come back tomorrow as we are sharing how we decorated our Dining Room chandelier.

{Coastal Christmas - Day 4} Creating a Beach Christmas Tree

Take a six foot tall artificial Christmas tree and add 600 clear mini lights, then throw in some tiny white starfish, beachy gift tags, white metal stars and a collection of glittered seashell ornaments from the previous year and what do you get?

Yep, it's our Beach Christmas tree in the living room this year and boy is it difficult to get a good photo of a Christmas tree {just sayin'}.

We used the Coastal Gift Tags which we've been buying throughout the year as the main decoration on our main Christmas tree {we have 3 tree total this year}. White starfish in various sizes were stuck here and there. We were happy to see that the handmade glitter seashell ornaments we made last year were in great shape still. Newspaper and tissue paper wrapping on the seashells last year worked wonderfully and we only had a small amount of glitter that came off.

As you can see, our green couch is now covered with the new Sure Fit slipcover and the living room looks beachy chic for Christmas. We're keeping it mainly light and simple this year with our decorations. We did add some pops of color under the tree with some of our favorite glass floats, vintage bottle and sailboat.

We're pretty happy with the finished tree and personally it puts a childish grin on my face when I turn the lights on each night. :O)
